Climbing Magazine App Reviews

Ill stick with the print edition

The content of the magazine is great, but the app is not appropriate for iPhone. The presentation is just medium-res page images, making is necessary to zoom to read anything but headlines, and sometime content is 3/4 or full-page width so its basically impossible to read without zooming and swiping back and forth. On the other hand, viewing one page at a time its impossible to take in some of the beautiful two-page spreads in the magazine. The zooming also coexists with page-turning, so my normal method for zooming on a specific part of an image on iPhone ends up turning the page--so instead I have to zoom, swipe, zoom again. Many of these things are probably fine on iPad. But you presumably still cant see two-page photos.

Great Magazine OK APP

LIVE all the content. Im an avid climber and I work at a climbing gym, and this magazine is super fun and helpful. The app could be formatted to be responsive and fit me screen though. Other magazines do it; I wish climbing did so I didnt always have to zoom in.

Very Good

A good mag, in a very good app.

Good app but improvements needed

I decided to renew my subscription using the ipad app, and so far I havent been disappointed. The extra ipad features like videos etc are really nice, and for the most part articles are well done and look great on the ipad format. My one gripe is that inset text on many images are nearly unreadable due to low resolution, which is a shame on the ipads retina display. I am guessing this is due to flattening of the image and text in photoshop or something like that. Higher res images would definitely be appreciated... Also a companion app for iMac and/or iPhone would be awesome to see sometime in the future.

Love it!

Great app, love the magazine!

Incredibly slow takes forever to get a magazine

App takes forever to download a magazine and this is on 100mbps Internet nothing else running

So cool

Its so cool to see Climbing on the iPad, especially because its not just an exact replica of the print magazine. The extra stuff like the slide shows and topos is really cool, and the photos look great. Would love to see more video!

Awesome

Photos absolutely jump off the page and look stunning!! Plus theres so much more interactive content, its like getting a whole bonus magazine. The slideshows and additional photos are wonderful, so I cant wait to see what theyll do when they add video. You get more content for less money, dont waste any paper, and its delivered right to your hand. Doesnt get any better. A definite must-download!

Great, want more!

Love how the photos jump off the page. Interactivity is really cool as well. More videos?

Sick App

I love reading Climbing Magazine and it is so convenient to have multiple issues all in one place. The topos and video are also an incredible edition and are well worth the purchase.

FAB!

How great to see the photos on the I-Pad and be able to catch up on the articles anytime....much better on the I-Pad a it eliminates the magazines piling up ( because who can toss them?). Easier on the trees too. Renewing my lapsed subscription for sure!

pretty nice

pretty cool setup and I like the iPad edition extras that arent part of the print version. One thing though, bring out the August issue, its already on the newsstand, so whats the hold up?

The best. Always has been, always will be.

Climbing magazine is the number one magazine for the sport of climbing. I have loved reading it, and participating in its creation for many many years. You will not be disappointed. -- John J McMullen

Lifelong reader

Ive been reading climbing magazine since i was a flatland-locked kid in Chicago climbing in my local dirt hole (Gravity Climbing gym). Its been my inspiration for the high alpine, its been my companion for travel planning, its been my lust for simply not being at my desk. Now, with beefed up skills content and super-charged digital content, this brand steps into the new era with better service, superior design, and high-caliber writing. I am looking forward to this year now that the title has been completely redesigned and that there is a fresh voice in the editorial chair. Love this magazine, and i only hope for better as the season goes on.

Great upgrades with v1

Ive been a subscriber since the first issue came out on iPad, and I was pretty pleased then with how great the magazine looked on a tablet. But its gotten so much richer. The amount of interactivity and the bonus video, map, and tech tip elements makes the magazine a multilayered experience that delivers a lot more information than what you get in print. As an intermediate climber who never feels quite skilled or fit enough, I especially like the touch-point technique diagrams. The combination of visual and reading learning is very effective.

The app that gets it

Im a fan of the Climbing Mag app. Unlike a lot of publications that think you can just PDF the print version of the magazine, slap it online, and wham-o, its suddenly iPad compatible (never the case), Climbings app has fun and playful interactive features. The forward-thinking multimedia components (Videos! Sound effects! Collapsable captions!) combined with its top-notch photographs, useful tips, and motivating articles make this one of my favorite magazine apps. This is how all publications should be thinking when it comes to tablet-friendly editions.

RockHound

Outstanding digital mag. No better way to get me inspired to get out and get climbing. Love the little touches they include on technique and destinations with the right amount of touch points and video. Great stuff.

iPad download

I love the ability to download and read at my leisure. you get features they cant do with the printed editions.

Awesome!

A surprisingly great app! Such a good deal for a year long subscription and you dont have to worry about it coming in the mail messed up or what to do with it after if you dont want to keep it...or if you do! The videos are pretty cool and I like how there can be different picture in the same spot that will cycle through. Great!

Fantastic!

Every issue tops the one before, the design team really pushes the possibilities of a magazine app. The articles are always intelligent and well written. It would be wonderful to do a few more stories on European climbing, we read it here too!
